History of Ubud Palace

The history of Ubud can be seen from the beginning of the 8th century, because there are historical records written on palm leaves, which tell the story of the guardian who founded Hinduism from India. Named Rsi Markandeya.

Before visiting the island of Bali, Rsi Markandeya first visited the island of Java. When Rsi Markandeya was on the island of Java. He received a revelation that at the foot of Mount Agung Besakih in Bali there were five types of metal that had extraordinary magical powers. Currently, the location of these five types of metal with extraordinary magical powers is the site of the largest temple in Bali, called Pura Besakih.

When Rsi Markandeya was visiting Bali. He felt a great energy in the Campuhan Ubud area, which is currently the location of the Gunung Lebah Temple. While in Bali, Rsi Markandeya also built several temples in other areas of Bali. Rsi Markandeya also introduced an irrigation system for agriculture in Bali with a terracing system. The farmers still use this agricultural system for rice farming in Bali. Therefore, when you travel to Bali, you will see lots of rice fields. Additionally, if you want to see the vast expanse of rice fields in Bali with a terrace system, you should visit:

  • Jatiluwih Village, Tabanan Regency.
  • Tegalalang Rice Terrace in Ubud.

Apart from teaching about irrigation systems, Rsi Markandeya also taught about the Banjar system (a local Balinese community organization system) which is responsible for local religious activities and customs. Until now, the Banjar system is still used throughout Bali.

Since the 8th century, when Rsi Markandeya declared the existence of divinity and high energy in the Campuhan Ubud area. Until now, the Campuhan Ubud area is highly respected by the Balinese people because of its spiritual power. The name Ubud comes from the word “Ubad” (Balinese) which means medicine. Because at that time around the Campuhan Ubud area, we found many medicinal plants for traditional medicine.

History of the Ubud Royal Palace

At the time of the collapse of the Majapahit Kingdom, namely in the 15th century. There was a large-scale migration of Javanese nobles from Java to Bali. Then Javanese nobles founded the Gelgel Kingdom in Klungkung district. A small district located in the southeast of the island of Bali.

In the 17th century, the Gelgel Kingdom expanded its power and expanded its territory to other areas in Bali. And created small royal palaces, one of which was the Sukawati royal palace.

The Gelgel Kingdom sent its prince to the Sukawati village area. Build a royal palace with extraordinary architectural beauty to serve as power in the Gianyar region. During the construction of the Sukawati royal palace, many Balinese artists were sent to the Sukawati area to help build the palace. After the construction of the fort in Sukawati was completed, many artists chose to live in Sukawati. Therefore, to this day the Sukawati area is the center of beautiful art in Bali. Such as dance, painting, sculpture, Balinese music.

Puri Saren Agung & Sukawati Kingdom

After successfully building the Sukawati palace at the end of the 17th century. King Sukawati sent his soldiers led by his two brothers to protect the Ubud area from endless conflict. The conflict that occurred in Ubud at the end of the 17th century was a conflict between two cousins. One of them is in the Padang Tegal Ubud area. Another one is in the Ubud Park area which is located in the northern area of Padang Tegal Ubud.

King Sukawati’s brother, Tjokorde Ngurah Tabanan, was sent to the Peliatan Ubud area. His other brother, Tjokorde Tangkeban, was sent to Sambahan Ubud.

The two brothers of King Sukawati then built palaces at their respective destinations with the aim of securing the Ubud area. After Tjokorde Ngurah Tabanan founded the kingdom in Peliatan Ubud, then Tjokorde Ngurah Tabanan with the help of King Mengwi filled the Ubud area with residents. With the increase in population in Ubud, Ubud’s economy began to grow.

Puri Saren Agung & Dutch Colonial

In the 19th century, Dutch colonialists began to enter the island of Bali. Several kingdoms, for example the Mengwi Kingdom, were not happy with the presence of the Dutch in their territory. Dutch intelligence was able to provoke the old enemy of the Mengwi kingdom, to the point of forming an alliance to attack the Mengwi kingdom. Due to the large number of enemies attacking the Mengwi Kingdom, the Mengwi Kingdom was exhausted, causing its territory to be divided by the alliance of kingdoms.

Finally, the Dutch government began to interfere in Balinese political affairs in the early 19th century. By attacking the kingdom of Badung, the kingdom of Buleleng and the kingdom of Klungkung. A big battle ensued, this war in Bali is better known as Puputan.

At the beginning of the 21st century under the government of Tjokorde Gede Raka Sukawati. The Ubud area is the Sukawati branch area. In 1981, Ubud became a sub-district in Gianyar Regency. Covering the Tegallalang, Peliatan, Mas and Kedewatan Village areas.
