THE STORY OF GUNUNG KAWI TEMPLE

Based on its history, Gunung Kawi Temple Tampaksiring is a sthana or place of worship for a Balinese King named Anak Wungsu, who was also the son of King Udayana. Once upon a time, King Udayana and his consort Gunapriya Dharmatpatni had three sons.

Airlangga as the eldest son and was the King of Kediri in East Java. Then, Marakata and Anak Wungsu who continued the throne of King Udayana in Bali. After King Udayana died, Marakata replaced him as King of Bali in 1025 AD. His younger brother replaced Marakata, Anak Wungsu in 1049-1080 AD.

The deceased kings are said to have been enshrined in Gunung Kawi Temple, Tampaksiring. On the temple wall, the inscription Kediri Kwadrat was found, which reads ‘Haji Lumang Ing Jalu’, which means the king who is immortalized in Jalu.

Meanwhile, in the second temple there is an inscription that reads ‘Rwa Nak Ira’, which means his two sons. So, the largest temple is the Udayana temple and the temple of his two children.

In addition, in the southern part of the temple, there is a Campuhan which is the confluence of two rivers, namely the Pakerisan and Bulan Rivers. Based on Hindu beliefs, the campuhan is to purify oneself. Until now, people still believe and continue to use holy water or tirta there for religious ceremonies.
